Status and function:


MEDITERRANEAN SOS Network is a non-profitable, non-governmental organization active since 1990, that comprises of 120 'Full Members' who form its annual General Assembly and approximately 3000 'Supporting Members'. MEDITERRANEAN SOS Network is registered in the Index of NGOs of the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Policy guidelines and priorities are drawn from the General Assembly that also elects the 7-members' Administrative Board. Currently, President of the Board is Mr Evagellos Koukiasas(see MEDSOS Network Organizational chart) .
At present, MEDITERRANEAN S.O.S. has 9 permanent collaborators/ staff (environmentalists, engineers, social scientists, administrative personnel). A network of external collaborators and scientific partners is being involved in certain projects in part-time or voluntary basis.

Aims...

  • Public awareness raising and encouraging changes in citizens' -especially youth- everyday behavior that impact on the environment
  • Advocating, lobbying and promoting cooperation among social partners, stakeholders and policy-makers at local, national, regional level
  • Promoting active public participation in sustainable development strategies and demonstrating alternative solutions in local communities
  • Promoting intercultural exchanges and balanced international cooperation among European - Mediterranean partners

  • Main projects & campaigns


1. Energy and Climate Change

  • 2007-present:  Implementation of Public awareness raising campaign “Climate action!” Environmental education program in schools in 8 of the largest cities n Greece (attended more than 22.000 pupils) and public events, focusing on awareness raising of citizens and pupils. Educational-informational package for teachers and special magazine edition developed under the campaign. The campaign firstly was funded by: European Regional Development Fund – Operational Programm “Environment”, Measure 5.2, “Environmental Awareness” and was implemented as part of “Sustainable Energy Europe”. After 2009 the environmental program is funded by private donations.
  • 2005-2008 : Project Partner in INTERREG IIB MEDOCC project “Med Eco-Quartiers” (Lead partner Municipality of Pezenas, France, www.med-ecoquartiers.org)
  • Ongoing information and awareness-raising on energy and climate change issues and relevant local, national and international policies
  • 2004-2007: Partner in LIFE-Environment project 'Sun and Wind' (beneficiary: Commune di Palermo, Italia) on applications of traditional Mediterranean bioclimatic practices in contemporary architecture.
  • 2006 : Implementation of youth meeting in Lesvos in August 2006 under EU’s YOUTH Program titled “Re-turn to Renewable Energy” with the participation of 42 young people from 8 Mediterranean countries.
  • 2006 : Conference “Climate Change and Policy for energy efficiency and renewable energy: the role of local authorities and social partners”, together with the Central Union of Greek Municipalities.
  • Lobbying governments and international organizations through the participation in international networks of NGOs active in climate issues (INFORSE - International Network for Sustainable Energy and CAN - Climate Action Network)
  • Partner in E.C. Youth project: 'It's time to be a critical consumer!' with young NGO members from Greece, Italia, Belgium, Portugal, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Tunisia
  • Cooperation with municipalities and local authorities for the promotion of energy efficiency and climate protection policies and measures


2. Marine environment and coastal zones

  • 2009: Project partner in the implementation of the MED Program  MEMO – Mediterranean Electronic Marine Highways Observatory, co financed by the EuropeanRegional Development Fund (http://www.programmemed.eu/fileadmin/PROG_MED/Projets_programmes_1_appel/MEMO.pdf)
  • 2005-2009 : Partner in LIFE-Environment project 'Collaborative Environmental Regeneration of Port-Cities: Elefsina Bay 2020' (beneficiary: Elefsina Port Authority, Greece). The project seeks to demonstrate that the regeneration of industrial port and urban areas is possible, if a dedicated investment in civic infrastructure takes place and the collaborative action of stakeholders is achieved.
  • 2005-2008 : Project partner in the implementation of the INTERREG IIIB MEDOCC AEM-MED “AUTOROUTES ELECTRONIQUES MARITIMES DE LA MEDITERRANEE AEM-MED”(Lead partner: Hellenic Rupublic – Ministry of Mercantile Marine, Aegean and Island policy, www.yen.gr).
  • Project partner in the implementation of the INTERREG IIIC project, Coastal Practice Network (CoPraNet) with international networks: The Coastal Union - E.U.C.C. and Friends of Coast
  • Information - volunteering campaigns for the protection of sea and coasts , 15-29 May 2005 (supported by UNEP/MAP)
  • National coordinator of large scale action 'Clean Up the Med' (in collaboration with LEGAMBIENTE, Italia).
  • 2000-2001 : Implementation of DAC-OECD (Hellenic Ministry of Environment, Planning and Public Works) project 'Sustainable management in Lebanon coasts', with NGO GREEN LINE, Lebanon


3. Water Resources

  • 2005-present: Implementing the environmental education programme Watersave: A Comprehensive Education Programme for Schools in Greece
  • 2006-2008:  Project partner in the implementation of the INTERREG IIIB Cadses project WAREMA “Water Resource Management in Protected areas”(www.cadses-warema.net)
  • Signatory to the 'European Declaration for a New Water Culture' (December 2004, Madrid Spain)
  • Ongoing (youth) information and training activities and local collaborative workshops on sustainable water management


4. Natural protected areas, local communities, urban environment

  • 2004-2009: Coordination of the project 'Sustainable Management of NATURA 2000 Area in Sifnos' Cyclades, supported by Hellenic Ministry of Environment and the local Municipality
  • Representation in the National Committee NATURA 2000 (with other Greek environmental NGOs)
  • April-May 2002: International youth meetings 'Med Youth and RIO+10' in Athens, Greece and Abrutso, Italia (with ARCI-Chieti and 75 youngs from 12 countries of EU, Balkans and the Middle East supported by E.C. , UNEP/MAP):
  • Itinerant Youth Exchange: 'Green jobs in protected areas', with 23 young from ARCI-Vasto, Italia, MedSOS, Greece, Akti, Cuprus
  • 2001: International Youth Meeting 'Sustainable Management of Natural Resources', 1-14 July 2001, Euvoia, Greece with 33 participants from Greece, Italia, Egypt, Turkey and Lebanon


5. EuroMed cooperation, Civil Society and Intercultural Dialogue

  • 2009 - 2011: Project Partner in emPOWER:  eParticipation Trial Project co-funded by the European Commission under the EU eParticipation Preparatory Action.
    eMPOWER. The program is implemented in Greece, Italy and Portugal, and  aiming to motivate and strengthen the involvement of NGOs and citizens in the decision-making process on environmental issues : climate change, biodiversity, mercury, waste management, water resources management, GMOs,  at a National and European level by providing method and tools for supporting citizens’ participation and collection of signatures to promote relevant public initiatives and demands of civil society (http://www.ep-empower.eu/epetitions/en/Home.aspx)
  • 2008-2009:  Project Partner in  Lifelong Learning Programme “LAUTC-Learning About Us Through Culture”(Lead partner NGO CESIE, Italy, www.lautc.eu)
  • 2007: Intercultural Youth Exchange Programme " Environment and Human Interactions: Practices from the past... Solutions for the future!",with the partivipation of  32 young people from six partner organizations from EuroMed Region, 26 July - 6 August, at Sifnos island,Greece - Financed by the European Commision programme YOUTH IN ACTION, Action 3.1,through the Greek General Secretariat for Youth,Supported by the Municipality of Sifnos.
  • 2005-2006: Project Partner in GRUNDTVIG II Programme "Learning Europe towards a learning democracy".Developing new methods for the integration of minority groups and migrants in society" (Lead partner Institut fur Migrations- und Aussiedlerfragen Heimvolkshochschule St. Hedwigs-Haus e.v, http://www.st-hedwigshaus.de/grundtvig.html)
  • 2006: Intercultural Youth Exchange Programme Med-Youth Creating a Sustainable Med-Future, with the participation of 27 young people from eight partner organizations from EuroMed Region, 20 - 31 July at Naxos Island, Greece - Supported by Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures.
  • Organized many international MEDA YOUTH projects involving orgs, trainers and youth leaders from all areas of the Mediterranean basin
  • 2001: Establishment and development of MARE ndash Social-Ecological Youth Network (supported by E.C, UNEP/MAP) - Sifnos, Cyclades, 16-25 August 2001 'Training for trainers on Euro-Med Co-operation and sustainability', with 75 young NGO members from 28 countries of the Euro-Med area.
